It would just take a FW to the 3800/3880 to allow the printer to use the HD inks and you would need to do a full purge and if the 2 inksets are not compatible then a cleaning carts are needed?Įpson I think feels not worth the effort and I would think Epson would be somewhat responsible if thinks causes issues. But if Epson did that would also effect the stock on K3 for the 3800/3880 and the production must also be considered as almost of the true photographers that print with an 3800/3880 would switch in a heartbeat, me as well, but the sales would be reduced I think too much unless they would plan for it down the road But they won't. Hello Mark, your 100% right Epson could but never has or will they no! Good thing at least is Epson has not had an issue with UC or K3 or K3VM and if they did they would not have done what HP did, now that a class act, credit to HP. I still think Epson makes more money on ink than equipment, so retrofitting the new ink set to older printer would, IMHO, generate a lot of corporate good will without costing Epson loss of revenue, and I truly doubt it would take a lot of R&D expense to accomplish. The enduser paid a modest premium for the 57+ ink replacement cartridge compared to the 57 cartridge, but he/she got a superior print longevity for his/her time/expense, and trouble. Yet HP realized the problem existed and chose to do something about it for its customers. The problem doesn't show up in the Wilhelm light fade test protocol because only pure ink colors, not color blends are tested. Why? The 57 magenta ink had bad catalytic fading problems when blended with the cyan ink in that original ink set. Hp set a nice president quite a few years ago, offering an HP 57+ magenta ink cartridges for printers originally designed for the HP 57 Cartridge. Hi Christopher, yes I do realize I resorted to a bit of hyperbole, but what I was trying to say to that Epson representative was Epson could pretty easily offer a retrofit of the new ink into many of its older K3 and K3VM printers if it chose to do so. Hello Mark to a point he is correct! Yes the ink should be design for the head and what he said is ok BUT if it's 98% the same head as the 3880 as Epson says then it should be fine, other than new RGB profiles. Tell that to all the third party ink vendors and endusers who run just about every concoction of ink imaginable through Epson printers:-) are all matched precisely to the piezoelectric properties of the printer head, blah, blah, blah". He practically took my head off! "you can't do that because ink viscosity, electrical properties, surfactant levels, etc. I'd even pay a premium for it if longevity is better. Good try, but not gonna happen! I actually suggested to that Epson guy how much customer good will would be generated by retrofitting the new HD ink set into the older K3 models. I'd be interested to hear from 3800/3880 owners.Well, who can lobby epson to put this mode into the 3880 (by firmware update)?!! This would be a very useful feature. I thought it was doing a great job, but this is a whole new world! Right now, I'm blown away by it's quality, but perhaps that's because I've been using an old HP all-in-one for too long. I've got large Epson Ultra papers on order and will have them soon, and I'll be anxious to see how this "cheap" OfficeMax paper compares.

These photos look much nicer printed on this paper than they do on my 27 inch monitor! I've subsequently printed out a large group photo from a holiday gathering using similar adjusted settings - it's not a fluke.

The Grand Canyon view came out excellent. The print came out awful with dark ink blotches, several roller marks, etc.īarely knowing what I'm doing with this new printer, I tried again after reducing the ink density by 25%, slowing down the print speed and the reducing the paper advance speed about 40%. Time for the big one - I reprinted it with the same settings using the OfficeMax 13x19 glossy. Next, I printed out a favorite full frame Grand Canyon photo on 4圆 Epson paper to test the setup. (This store doesn't carry Epson paper in large sizes.) They sell 20 sheets for $30.49 stock number OM96073.

While doing so, I couldn't resist also buying a pack of large format paper: "OfficeMax Photo Paper - Glossy Professional (10 mil)" in the 13"x19" size. It actually printed okay - suprise! Then, I ran out to pick up some Epson paper before the stores close. So, I've got about 400 sheets of HP Photo Premium left and I tried one of those. The only thing not included is the complimentary samples of Epson paper. It looks new, and came with a complete set of new ink. This is a factory refurbished unit, so the price is about $400 below MSRP. So far, I am just amazed at the quality of the prints - very sharp with beautiful colors. Received my new Epson 3880 late this afternoon.
